About the White River

Fed all year by the cool tailwaters of Bull Shoals Lake, the White River is a prolific trout habitat and fishing destination. Rainbow and Brown trout are the most abundant here, with smaller populations of Brook and Cutthroat. At 722 miles long, the White River flows from the Boston Mountains to the Mississippi River, but the best fishing is near its source. The little town of Cotter proclaims itself the "Trout Capital in the USA." One of the top trout fisheries in the nation, the White River is stocked every year with more than a million rainbow and brown trout.

What to Expect Each Season on the White River

Trout are always in season on the White River, but the best season depends a lot on the type of fishing you want to do. Here are some seasonal tips to keep in mind when planning your White River fishing trip.

  • Spring

    (March – May)

When the mayflies hatch (and people are brave enough to wade into the cold water), flyfishing on the White River is reaching its seasonal peak. Rainbow trout are active, and browns, brook and cutthroat are especially so. Plan for bigger crowds by booking rooms and guided trips early.

  • Summer

    (June - August)

Arkansas summers mean fish and fishers are more easily found in the shade. Lower water levels make late summer the peak of "dry fly" season. Grasshoppers are a local favorite for White River brown trout. That said, spin fishing is still the most popular way to do it.

  • Fall

    (September – November)

Beautiful scenic views and cooler weather make fall an even more relaxing time to fish the White River. The lower river flow makes the dam-fed White River a hotbed for brown trout getting ready to spawn. Spin and flyfishing are still in full swing

  • Winter

    (December – February)

The coldest months are prime time for trophy brown trout on the White River and one of the more popular times of year to visit. The shad kill happens once a year during winter, and the resulting feeding frenzy makes big brown trout more common
