The Buffalo stretches across 150 miles of North Arkansas in Ozark Mountain country. Scenery along the river is spectacular and floating conditions can range from wild white water on the upper end to calm deep pools on the lower portion. A river for all seasons, canoeing is a year-round possibility on the Buffalo, except in the upper reaches where it is limited to the winter and spring months. Area outfitters provide canoe rentals, equipment, guides and related services. Lodging choices range from genuine log cabins and Bed and Breakfast facilities to modern motel rooms. Designated campgrounds are located at frequent intervals on the river. The most famous of all Buffalo River floats take place on the 25 mile section between Ponca and the Hwy 7 crossing. Class I and II rapids (complete with hazards like "Gray Rock"); the highest waterfall in in-America at Hemmed-in-Hallow; the 11,3000 acre Ponca wilderness; towering cliffs including the 500 foot tall Big Bluff; and an excellent assortment of swimming holes are features of this popular section of the Buffalo. Several conveniently located campground access points along the river are located between Ponca and Hwy 7 at: Steel Creek, Kyles Landing, Erbie and Ozark. Good floats for families are the 10 miles in the Upper River between Pruitt and Carver and the 7-5 mile float on the Lower Buffalo between Buffalo Point and Rush.
